Did you know not everything went to plan when Churchill College was built?
Exposing another curious hidden history in the design of the College, Prof. Mark Goldie explains how not everything went to plan when the original site was constructed.
While most of the original site was constructed in line with the plans of the architects Richard Sheppard, Robson and Partners, there was at least one notable alteration.
The original plans saw the chapel take a prominent position at the front of the College, on Storey’s Way. Following a sometimes acrimonious debate amongst the College fellowship about whether a 20th century College focused on science and technology should have a chapel or not, this was abandoned. A compromise was later achieved when the independent Chapel Trust was given permission to construct a building at the other end of the College site, close to the University’s observatories, for the use by members of all faiths and none.

What do academics actually do? What motivates them to get out of bed each morning and to deliver what is - or in many cases what isn’t - expected of them? For a student setting out, the life of senior academics may seem very mysterious, particularly as many may end up taking on responsibilities and activities far removed from where an individual started. The trajectory from student to senior ac...

I saw similar experiments with Squeak and Pharo, which are smalltalk systems. Due to the usage of closures instead of "object patterns", the code is usually very compact. It is interesting how Smalltalk programmers are often against static typing. They demonstrate it by having stuff like a HTML and pdf browser built within. There is even an alternative (the Self language) that has no classes at all. Their idea is that types do not solve much. They are just a different abstraction. Haskell and Smalltalk do not conflict as much that people may think. It differs mainly in where you place your code and how you test/verify your code.

Lord Nelson Almighty‼️😳 Did i just hear the Rear Admiral compare a highly literate Man (Admiral Lord Jacky Fisher) to a completely illiterate man (Donny Boy Trump)⁉️ Trump couldn’t find the Baltic on a map if you circled it‼️ An incredible False Equivalency. There’s a Huge gulf between Dreadnaught & Trump Tower - I’m literally sea sick 🤢 However, a fascinating & enlightening series of presentations, particularly by Admiral Fisher’s descendant family. Has the biopic movie been made or available by now in 2024? Would truly make my day…

I think the tally system is cool, but what if it was like there are 3 lanes open and those are up for a bidding war between companies for spots in the first, second, third spot, etc. By having the bidding war, if you bank up a tally, that tally isn't worth a full van spot. It loses value depending on how everyone else is banking as well, making it more incentivizing to not bank up your stuff.

I arrived spring in Cambridge very late. Nothing was open. The year was 2000 and I was there for the next 6 weeks. Never been there before. Didn't know anyone or how things worked. I came in from Scottsdale, Arizona. I asked a cab driver for advice. I was slated to stay at Clare College and it was locked up tight. The fellow called around and Churchill apparently said bring the dumb yank here and we will take care of him. They did! I had a nice clean room and a great breakfast. They charged me a few pounds. I think it was like 4 US dollars. Plus everyone was exceptionally nice!

As someone aspiring to undertake a masters in computer science, it was disheartening to see the question on Trigonometry right from the get go. Of course I understand why they're there (a basic aptitude in maths is required) but sadly I have very little formal traching in trigonometry. However, my confidence was almost regained when I saw the next problem. Because I immediately thought about quieing the vans based on weight! So it shows me that I should be looking for courses with more emphasis on logic over mathematics.

Because of the El nino, even though we've had El Nino's for hundreds of years, this is the first time it's been record-breaking everywhere? @ate117 Please add links here to the primary source scientific papers that show that we have "record" temperatures and "record breaking" El Nino's because the scientific literature and the conclusions of scientists who have spent their careers studying those subjects does not support your statements. There is no scientific basis to the idea that CO2 drives the climate. Ice core data shows when temperature and CO2 correlate there is a lag of @800 years after temperature changes before co2 changes and numerous periods in history where CO2 levels are low and temperature is high. Instead of listening to school age children who abscented themselves from school and pressure groups set up and run by the super-rich you might want to research what the top scientists in their field say on the idea that CO2 driven climate change.

What about the following system for the trucks: The company with the lowest „sum“ of weight after adding the next truck will be allowed to drive their truck. If the sum of two companies is equal, the company with the lowest „amount“ of summands is allowed to drive their truck. So for the first few steps it‘d look like this: 2t, 3t, 4t, then of course 2t (2t+2t), 3t (3t+3t), 2t (2t+2t+2t), 4t (4t+4t), 2t (2t+2t+2t+2t), 3t (3t+3t+3t), 2t (2t+2t+2t+2t+2t), 4t (4t+4t+4t), etc.

47:23 - In the booklet "Freemasonry'' published by the German S.S. which had six editions altogether between 1938 and 1943 Kalergi is revealed of espousing the idea that the peoples of Europe should become a ''racial mongrel'', a ''Euro-Asiatic-Negroid race of the future''. He also said that only the Jews should be allowed to remain pure to provide the new aristocracy. The Masonic newspaper "Beacon" commented that Brother Coudenhove's work "is a Masonic work of the highest order, and to be able to work on it is a lofty task for all brother masons"... - Hmmm... Any more questions? It is very important to incorporate every source available into a biography, otherwise a distorted picture will form about a person who we want to portray. I believe that the author worked hard in compiling this book, but he didn't want to go too far to reveal the absolute truth, definitely didn't want to tread on certain feet, and didn't want to risk funding for this book, or even his job or status, which is quite understandable. For this very reason one should always treat a person whoever mentions the term "conspiracy theory" with healthy suspicion. The term is used 99% of the time when someone tries to discredit and marginalize individuals or groups who question "official" narratives and accounts or offer "alternative" explanations for significant events.

I felt that this candidate wasn't assertive on both of the questions. Second question he could have formalise his reasoning by drawing a flowchart or running a priority queue algorithm or even demonstrate a naive approach of algorithm by showing that the fair system could be implemented equally by sharing quotas of each company onto the ferry's trip each time, then looping to make decision whether or not the level of products remaining are the same for all companies or whether the loading share needs to be revised in order to maximise the full capacity usage of goods being transported.

In a way FDR was right about the Russians. Up until their newer invasions under Putin, they did become less barbaric.
